Exodus 19, Luke 22

Exodus 19

After bringing the people out of Egypt, God is now ready to establish His covenant with His people.  They are to be His “treasured possession among all peoples”, a “kingdom of priests and a holy nation”.  The people of Israel saw all of God’s power and glory as he brought them out of Egypt – but how quickly they forget!

They turned on God when they were trapped against the Red Sea, but he saved them.  They complained about no water, and he gave them water.  They complained about a lack of food, and he gave them bread and meat from heaven.  And they complain about a lack of water a second time, and a second time he gave them water.  Now God is about to establish a covenant with this bunch???  Why???

What does this tell us about God’s love for His people?  What does that mean for us?

Like the people of Israel, He answers with His grace and love – thanks be to God!

Luke 22

What a parallel to Exodus 19!  Here is what we learn about in this chapter:

There is a plot to kill Jesus.

Judas, one of the twelve agrees to betray Jesus.

The disciples get into an argument over which one of them is greatest.

Jesus is betrayed and arrested.

Peter denies Jesus.

Jesus is mocked by his accusers.

And in the middle of it, he gives us his Holy Supper – His body and blood given for us for the forgiveness of sins…

Again, he answers with His grace and love – thanks be to God!
